Every year millions of athletes play on Randall’s Island Park’s 60 athletic fields. Sports teach valuable life skills and, for some, playing in a park is the start to their careers. This is true for many members of the US Women’s National Soccer Team, who this year defended their title as World Cup Champions! This year we are looking forward to honoring a soon-to-be announced member of the team at the Randall’s Island Park Alliance Gala, on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at Ziegfeld Ballroom, and hope that you will join us in supporting the Alliance.

We are also thrilled to honor an accomplished couple, Roberta (“Robbie”) Kaplan and Rachel Lavine. Robbie is a Founding Partner of Kaplan, Hecker & Fink, LLP, which takes on pressing civil rights issues, as well as cutting edge commercial and white collar legal representations. Robbie is the attorney who won Windsor vs. The United States, the landmark Supreme Court case which required the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages and led to nationwide marriage equality. She is also the co-founder of the TIME’S Up Legal Defense Fund, and the organization’s Board Chair. Rachel Lavine is a longtime activist, the NY State Democratic Committee member for downtown Manhattan, and co-founder and Chair of the State Party’s Progressive Caucus. Rachel currently serves on the board of Eleanor’s Legacy, an organization dedicated to training and supporting female Democratic candidates to all levels of New York office, as well as Everyone Reading, a dyslexia advocacy organization, and is past Chair of New York’s LGBT Community Center Board.

We are also excited to honor Arlene Virga, Executive Director of the Yorkville Youth Athletic Association, as she retires from 27 years of service. Arlene’s leadership has elevated YYAA to now serve over 6,000 children in baseball, flag football, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, basketball, volleyball, theater, camps and after school programming. Her dedication has benefited countless NYC families and we look forward to honoring her.
